The Program

Participation in LBC involves attending, organizing, or leading activities that fall into three general categories: career and professional development; service, citizenship and leadership; and experience with domestic and international diversity.

Career and Professional Development

Service, Citizenship and Leadership

Experience with Diversity

Progress in each of the three areas is tracked by a point system. Points are earned by submitting reports on participation in activities. The number of points earned varies with the intensity of the activity.

Completing the LBC certificate requires that you:

  • Participate in at least one intensive activity lasting an extended period of time, such as semester-long study abroad, full-time summer internship, two (consecutive) semesters of undergraduate research, an entrepreneurial activity together with the Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and academic year resident assistant. Such an activity is worth 10 points.
  • Accumulate a total of 24 points, with at least 4 points in each of 3 categories.
  • Include either (a) 3 credits of approved coursework with grades of P or C- or higher (one or more courses totaling 3 credits can meet this requirement) or (b) a semester-long study abroad program (worth 10 points) or some combination of spring break (4 points) and/or summer study abroad activities (6 points), totaling 10 points.

In most cases, a maximum of 6 points per year and 10 points in total may be earned for any particular activity. It is estimated that completion of the certificate will take approximately 30 hours over your college career in addition to the intensive 10-point activity described above.

The Benefits

Don't just get a degree, get an education!

The College of Science wants you to learn beyond the classroom! As majors in the College you already work with our faculty and staff to develop into skilled scientists of the future. Now we are asking you to take advantage of the many opportunities you have while you are in college to go beyond the walls of the classrooms and labs and put your disciplines into practice in real world settings. We think this experience is of such importance that we will recognize you for doing so with a Learning Beyond the Classroom Certificate that will be noted on your Purdue academic transcript.

The benefits:

  • Expanded academic achievement
  • Improved classroom performance
  • Enhanced prospects for graduate school and employment
  • Increased competence in discipline
  • Strengthened confidence as a professional

A recent analysis shows that students who have earned the Learning Beyond the Classroom Certificate have a higher GPA at graduation and finish their degrees more quickly than students who did not earn an LBC certificate.

The GPA of students with LBC certification is on average 0.213 higher than those without LBC (p < 0.001). Students with LBC certification on average graduated half a semester earlier than those without LBC (p < 0.001). The LBC group has its on-time graduation rate higher by 12.27% (p < 0.001).

Courses

Among the requirements of the Learning Beyond the Classroom Certificate Program is that you participate in either (a) approved coursework with grades of P or C- or higher (one or more courses totaling 3 credits meets this requirement) or (b) semester-ling study abroad or the equivalent.

Here is a table of courses that have been identified as meeting the objectives of this program. If there is an experiential course which is not here that you believe to be similar to those listed, contact the administrator. The College of Science Office of Undergraduate Education reserves the right to determine whether a course meets the program criteria.

Killexams : The Quantum Effect On Cybersecurity

Field Chief Technology Officer (CTO) & Evangelist, Cortex, Palo Alto Networks focusing on digital risk & cyber threats.

The advent of GDPR heralded a new era of protection for individual rights and freedoms. Initially not taken seriously, organizations now find themselves rethinking their approach, with accumulated penalties nearing the € 3 billion mark.

Are organizations on a similar path with quantum computing?

Cybersecurity researchers and technologists are rightly concerned with the mixed blessing that is quantum computing. Whilst it holds potential for many benefits from machine learning and data analytics to cryptography and cybersecurity, it creates new risks and exposures, particularly around its ability to break most modern encryption, which underpins the internet, communications and e-commerce—the very fabric of our society.

The Role Of Encryption In Our Daily Lives

At its most basic, encryption is the act of taking an original piece of human-readable information and transforming it into incomprehensible text. Though encryption is not top of mind for most of us, it has become an important enabler for various critical activities we take for granted.

The two primary forms of encryption are symmetric, in which the same key is used to encrypt and decrypt the data, and asymmetric, which involves a pair of mathematically linked keys.

Symmetric tends to be fast and efficient and is most widely used to secure communications and stored data.

Asymmetrical or public-key encryption is used for securely exchanging symmetric keys and for digitally authenticating certificates, messages, documents and e-commerce payments, pairing the public keys with their owner’s identities.

While the maths is different, nearly all internet communications use both symmetric and asymmetrical cryptography. Hence both forms need to be secure.

Why Should We Be Concerned Now?

While encryption remains an integral part of how society functions, it is not without risk and concerns. The eventual arrival of commercial quantum computers powerful enough to break public-key encryption will be a significant threat to national security, financial, health and private data.

Many aspects of cryptography rely on computational complexity arguments—the maths. The security of an algorithm is derived from the fact that no one has figured out a way to break it within a reasonable amount of time for it to be a concern.

Generally, cryptographic algorithms will have parameters that provide different levels of security. For example, RSA keys can be generated in different sizes, depending on how secure the key needs to be. A 512-bit RSA key was previously considered adequate security, but as cyberattacks have improved in sophistication, along with increased computing power, society has responded by steadily increasing the key length to defend itself. However, the longer we make the keys, the more impractical an algorithm becomes; there is a balance between useability and security.

The many data breaches we see today highlight that most organizations hold data beyond its regulatory retention period or usefulness. The risk with this is that data stolen today does not have to be decrypted today to hold value. Intellectual property, financial data, healthcare data and other sensitive data stolen today could still be relevant beyond the next decade. And cybercriminals understand this.

Additionally, in October 2021, U.S. intelligence officials singled out quantum computing as one of five key foreign threats, with the others being artificial intelligence, biotechnology, semiconductors and autonomous systems.

A large-scale quantum computer could allow for the decryption of most common cybersecurity protocols as well as all previously recorded traffic, putting at risk our economic prosperity, national security and much of our daily lives as we know it.

Preparing For A Post-Quantum World

Quantum computing also raises the question of regulation and law. For example, under GDPR (Article 5) and other similar laws, there is a requirement that personal data is to be “processed in a manner that ensures appropriate security of personal data...using appropriate technical or organizational measures.” This requirement will be unlikely to be met if organizations continue to apply conventional encryption in the quantum era.

Moreover, many data breaches attracting global attention from regulators, litigators and class actions are the result of poor cyber hygiene, stolen/weak credentials or known vulnerabilities. What risk do organizations carry when they knowingly continue to employ conventional encryption that is susceptible to a quantum attack? Will data stolen today and exposed later on due to quantum advances in the future result in class actions and penalties? Arguably, much of what is communicated today is recorded, stored and available for later decryption.

Where To Start?

It is important to note that quantum technologies are not new to society. Quantum mechanics has enabled devices such as MRIs, LEDs and even the GPS clocks in your car. While the timing for quantum computer capability is unclear (projections are by 2030), the first step is to acknowledge its impact on today’s cryptography and that current cybersecurity solutions will largely be inadequate. Such risk needs to be considered now.

One solution is for organizations to start thinking about post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithms and replacing current algorithms with new quantum-resistant algorithms. Last year, NIST named the first four encryption algorithms it believes will survive the arrival of quantum computing. Organizations should evaluate the security of post-quantum candidates and transition to using these algorithms to ensure their data remains secure. Start by identifying the best options and plan your transition, noting that PQC solutions are still in development.

Another option is quantum key distribution (QKD). This creates a shared secret between users that is used to create secure messages, which are transmissible over conventional channels. QKD ensures forward secrecy but requires special-purpose technology such as a high-quality optical fiber infrastructure. It is a method to help protect session keys against being compromised.

Organizations also need to consider updating their procurement policies, mandating that future technology purchases require cryptographic flexibility—the ability to add and switch to newer, more secure algorithms as they become available.

Realistically, quantum security should not be viewed as a replacement for existing measures but instead as an additional form of security that will need to be managed alongside the current infrastructure. Organizations will need to factor in how they will deploy, manage and maintain both conventional and post-quantum security on their systems.

Gamification of the CTL Certification Program

Points and a badging system are used to track progress and to encourage participation in the CTL Certification Program. To receive a certificate, participants must earn 100,000 points. These can include "Gold" points, "Platinum" points, and "Green" points. 10,000 Gold or Platinum points are awarded for participation in each CTL-hosted workshop and for teaching observations and 5,000 Green points are awarded for developing teaching materials, creating teaching artifacts, and participating in CTL homework assignments.

Each workshop or homework can only be used once towards the achievement of a specific CTL certification.

Tracking CTL Certification Points

  • Tracking Points

CTL Passport Image Points for full attendance at Center for Teaching and Learning-hosted events will be logged and recorded based on the sign-in records for each event, so be sure to sign in when you arrive. Points and badges are tracked and displayed publicly on the CTL Certification Leaderboard. The leaderboard is updated manually several times each month. If your records don't align with the points displayed on the leaderboard, please contact the CTL.

When you attend CTL-hosted workshops, you will also be given a badge for the workshop series as well as a sticker for your points which you can affix in your CTL Passport for your own records.  If you have not received a CTL passport or a CTL neck wallet to hold your passport, be sure to grab one on your next visit to the CTL!

  • Gold Points

Gold Points are awarded for attending CTL-hosted workshops.

    10k

    • One CTL-hosted workshop = 10,000 Gold Points
    • Workshops are presented by UAB Center for Teaching and Learning faculty, CTL Points Partners, or invited guests. Most workshops are presented at the CTL (4th floor of Lister Hill Library). Workshops in the Medical Educators Series may be presented in Volker Hall and the Bradley Conference Center.  Individual schools, departments, and other groups may request workshops to be presented at faculty meetings, retreats, and other gatherings. Please double-check the location of your event when you register.
    • Gold Points can only be used once towards the achievement of a specific CTL certification.
  • Green Points

Green Points are awarded for proof of Teaching Artifacts and Activities.

    5k

    • One CTL-approved Teaching Artifact/Activity/Homework = 5,000 Green Points
    • Teaching Artifacts are documents, small projects, or other products created as a result of learning acquired through a CTL workshop. Examples include a course map or syllabus created using backwards design, a test or quiz created containing “good” test questions, a recorded lecture prepared for a flipped classroom, a Team Based Learning application exercise, and so forth. Teaching artifacts must be assigned by workshop presenters in order to receive Green Points.
    • Green points may also be earned for activities completed in an effort to Boost one’s teaching. Examples include consulting with a CTL faculty member or teaching fellow, sharing a Teaching Artifact with another teacher, observing another teacher’s classroom, tutoring another teacher as they create a Teaching Artifact, and so forth. Outside activities must first be approved by the CTL in order to receive Green Points.
    • Green Points can only be used once towards the achievement of a specific CTL certification.
  • Platinum Points

Platinum points are awarded for attending Platinum-level CTL-hosted workshops, for participating in teaching observations, and for completing a Platinum capstone project.

    10k Platinum

    • One Platinum CTL-hosted workshop = 10,000 Platinum points**
    • Platinum workshops are presented by UAB Center for Teaching and Learning personnel and carry the Platinum points designation. Platinum workshops are generally at least 90 minutes long and involve a significant out-of-workshop assignment. At least one Platinum workshop is offered each month during the semester.
    • Having one's teaching observed by CTL personnel or observing the teaching of another CTL-approved teaching earns 10,000 Platinum points.
    • The completion and presentation of the CTL Platinum capstone teaching project earns 10,000 Platinum points.

**When you attend Platinum-level workshops, you will first receive 10k Gold points. Upon submission and review of the required Platinum homework, your 10k Gold points will be converted into 10k Platinum Points. Points will not be awarded until homework submissions are reviewed and commented on by the workshop presenter, which may take a little more time than 5k Green Point homework.
