by JENNY HOPE, Daily Mail
Valium, one of the world's best-known tranquillisers, has been taken off the market by its maker.
Roche has decided to stop producing the branded version of a drug prescribed to millions who became overwhelmed by the stress of living in the 20th century.
Valium was dubbed the ' housewives' choice' and immortalised by the Rolling Stones as Mother's Little Helper.
Its huge success put Roche in the pharmaceutical super league, where the Swissbased company remains.
The drug belongs to the family of benzodiazepines widely prescribed for anxiety and sleep disorders, and as muscle relaxants and anti-convulsants.
There were claims that Valium, introduced in 1963, could lead to years of dependency - with women particularly vulnerable - in patients too anxious to leave their homes.
There were countless reports of careless overprescribing by doctors, and some experts claimed it was as difficult to come off Valium as it was to break a heroin habit.
Comedian Freddie Starr was among those who blamed the pills for him becoming a 'walking zombie' in the early 1980s after he took them to cope with the break-up of his first marriage.
Probably the most notorious Valium addict was John Hinckley, who shot and wounded President Reagan. Psychiatrists at his trial were divided over the part the drug played in the shooting. Some said it could have 'impaired his control'.
But many found Valium a great help when used shortterm to cope with a crisis.
The drug is no longer protected by patent and unbranded, generic versions of the drug called diazepam - made by other companies - will continue to be available.
Roche said last night: 'It is not unusual for researchfocused companies like us to discontinue a medicine after its patent expires. This is the case with Valium.'

Image: Leon Neal (Getty Images)
Microsoft’s Bing is introducing ChatGPT and GPT 4.0 to its search tool in the upcoming weeks, and screenshots of the what could be the new interface have surfaced on social media.
The screenshots show a search box telling the user “Ask me anything…” which then provides an automated response, including asking the user for their opinion. According to alleged screenshots of the ChatGPT tool’s responses, the AI also appears to cite its sources.
The images seem to be a beta test which reportedly appeared briefly on Thursday before it disappeared. Student and designer Owen Yin posted on Twitter that he believed the new interface appeared on Bing, and included a screenshot of what he assumed will be replacing the old search engine.
“Bing’s ChatGPT integration just appeared for me. Replaces the search bar with a composer for natural-language questions,” Yin wrote. He added that the traditional search results are still there, but claimed there is now an added tab, allowing the user to start a chat with the ChatGPT tool.
Microsoft did not immediately respond to Gizmodo’s request for comment and has not yet confirmed if the screenshots are accurate.
G/O Media may get a commission
Yin told The Verge that he hadn’t done anything to make Bing’s new interface pop up, saying he had only set his Microsoft Edge browser homepage to Bing, and the new AI popped up. “Didn’t do anything to find it,” Yin told the outlet. “After a couple of minutes, it stopped working ... Jaw dropped when I realized what I was looking at!”
Other users said they noticed a change to Bing’s search engine as well and shared additional screenshots of what they claim could be the new Bing. Nazmul Hossain posted two images of the alleged interface on Twitter, and wrote, “This morning I was experiencing the CHAT feature of Microsoft Bing search and then a few moments later disappeared it.”
ChatGPT launched in November, becoming available to the public, and very likely became the fastest-growing app in history when it reached 100 million users in the first two months. In the wake of ChatGPT’s popularity, search engines including Microsoft and Google have accelerated their plans to incorporate AI tools into the user experience.
Microsoft will reportedly announce the new version of Bing in the coming weeks.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — He answers to the nickname Jet, confesses to having “little man” syndrome and has a high-pitched voice — constantly imitated by his teammates and coach — that would make a high school freshman blush.
But Jerick McKinnon, the Chiefs’ diminutive running back, has also made an outsized contribution as something of a quarterback helper. He caught nine touchdown passes during the regular season to tie the Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk’s 2001 mark for scoring receptions by a running back.
“He just finds a way to get in the end zone,” Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “A lot of those things he’s not the first read, he’s not the second read. He’s able to just be in the right spot at the right time whenever I need to hit a check down, I can get it to him and then he makes the most of it by getting into the end zone.”
Perhaps the best example of McKinnon’s savvy came in a December game against the Denver Broncos, when Mahomes was flushed from the pocket and McKinnon shot ahead of a defender who keyed in on the quarterback. Mahomes quickly dished a no-look pass that McKinnon took 56 yards for a touchdown.
At 5-foot-9 and 216 pounds, McKinnon has also been a shockingly effective blocker, a skill that may help fend off the Bengals’ defense in Sunday’s A.F.C. championship game with Mahomes nursing a sprained right ankle.
McKinnon, a 30-year-old journeyman, was selected as a playoff captain by his teammates because of his good humor and professionalism.
Kansas City’s down-to-the-wire victory over Philadelphia gave the team its second title in four seasons.
“It’s not like he’s looking for the glory or the praise,” Mahomes said. “He just comes to work every single day with a smile on his face and he brings the energy. You ask anybody in the locker room, and he’s probably one of, if not the favorite guy in the locker room.”
Kansas City Coach Andy Reid said McKinnon had fulfilled the role of “big brother” for a team that is stacked with rookies and second- or third-year pros.
“He’s got the high-pitched voice,” Reid said. “Everybody thinks the world of him and loves him.”
Reid, too, has added a McKinnon impersonation alongside his take on Mahomes’s gravelly foghorn tone, but has yet to debut it publicly.
McKinnon has taken the long path to a breakout season. A third-round selection of the Minnesota Vikings in 2014, he spent four years as a backup before signing a four-year, $30 million deal with San Francisco in 2018. That year, McKinnon tore an anterior cruciate ligament, an injury that kept him from playing until 2020. He did not have many options left when Kansas City offered him a one-year deal before last season.
The injury delay made him evangelical about taking care of his body. Besides the usual stretches and rolls before and after practices, McKinnon alternates acupuncture and dry needling along with cupping throughout the week. He said the former star running back Adrian Peterson, with whom he played in Minnesota, impressed upon him how important it was to do everything possible to remain in peak shape.
Reid says McKinnon’s background as a quarterback at Georgia Southern University allows him to see the whole field and use his intuition to feel for where he needs to be as a play unfolds.
“He kind of knows how the game works as a whole,” Reid said. “I think that helps him in the run game — knowing how gaps are set up, knowing how secondaries fill for the run.”
Reid added: “He can catch the ball on top of all of that.”
McKinnon was Kansas City’s third-leading pass catcher in the regular season with 54 receptions, but he is perhaps most beloved by Kansas City’s offensive line for his “little man” rage that shows itself in his mighty blocking, especially when opponents blitz Mahomes.
In most personnel packages, McKinnon and Creed Humphrey, the team’s 6-foot-4 All-Pro center, are responsible for picking up blitzes and making the necessary adjustments to protect Mahomes.
The team’s offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy, says McKinnon’s blocking prowess gets overlooked because of his stature, explosive running and his pass-catching.
“That’s probably one of the most underrated deals that people don’t think about when they mention his name,” Bieniemy said. “He’s a good football player that happens to play running back.”
McKinnon does not get a lot of carries — he ran the ball 72 times for 291 yards this season. The rookie back Isiah Pacheco led Kansas City this season with 830 yards on 170 carries.
In overtime against the Houston Texans last month, however, McKinnon showed a swagger that tickled his quarterback. With Kansas City on the Texans’ 26-yard line and within field goal range, Mahomes called for a McKinnon run.
“Two hands on the ball,” Mahomes said as they broke the huddle.
“I’m going to score,” McKinnon told him. Then he made good on the prediction for a game-winning touchdown.
Mahomes marveled, “He’s a little old but he still has his speed.”

The new interface offers more at-a-glance information about where your package is. Screenshot by Jon Porter / The Verge
Gmail’s iOS and Android apps have been updated with a new interface that makes it easier to see where your packages are in transit, and when they might arrive. The feature was announced last November, when Google said it would be arriving “in the coming weeks,” but it’s only been spotted in the wild by the likes of 9to5Googleand XDA-Developersover the past couple of days. It’s unclear exactly when it went live, but the feature appears to be available now if you know where to look.
The feature is currently opt-in, making it easy to miss it if you don’t know where to look. Google’s original blog post announcing the feature had a screenshot of a prompt in the Gmail app asking if you want to turn the feature on, but for now most people are seemingly having to dig through the app’s settings to enable it. On iOS the “Package tracking” toggle can be found in the “Data privacy” menu, while on Android a toggle of the same name can be found in the “General” settings section, according to Android Police.
The old interface (left) shown at the top of an email vs the new one (right).
Sure enough, when I enabled the feature in Gmail’s iOS app I could see the new delivery tracking interface for a accurate eBay purchase which was shipped via UPS. The new interface highlights when the item was delivered in the main Gmail inbox screen, and provides a more detailed view when I tap into the email itself. In contrast, the old interface shows no tracking info in the main inbox view (beyond what a retailer might include in an email’s subject line), and I have to tap a hyperlink in the email to see tracking information.
Gmail can now pull out delivery information to show directly in your inbox. Note that this eBay delivery confirmation email has the subject line “Order delivered.” Screenshot by Jon Porter / The Verge
The feature doesn’t appear to be supported across all delivery services. Although it’s working for me in the UK with an order shipped by UPS, it doesn’t appear to be appearing for a similar UK-based order shipped via French-headquartered delivery company DPD, or for an order to my Netherlands-based colleague via Dutch courier PostNL. Google previously said that the interface would be supported by “most major US shipping carriers.”
Still, when it works Gmail’s new package tracking feature is a neat little feature, and turning it on seems like a no-brainer.

Russia Invades Ukraine
In villages devastated by war, a Ukrainian volunteer delivers food and water to animals left behind by owners who fled the Russian invasion.
1Yevhen Dubovikov (pictured) is from Syevyerodonetsk, a city in Ukraine's Luhansk region that was captured by Russian forces in June 2023.
Since evacuating from his hometown and resettling in Dnipro with his mother and his beloved dog last spring, the 36-year-old has clocked up more than 100,000 kilometers delivering aid to the animal and human populations of eastern Ukraine's war-ravaged towns and villages.
2The view from the window of Dubovikov's minivan in a war-damaged Ukrainian settlement.
The volunteer departs from his base in Dnipro around once every week, taking about 600 kilograms of supplies for each trip. The aid runs are paid for from donations and Dubovikov's own pocket.
3As well as feeding those animals he sees himself, Dubovikov says "my task is to find people who feed stray animals in every settlement and I leave them food."
In many villages recaptured from Russian forces it's not possible to buy food for animals or people.
4A local man in a settlement near the fighting in eastern Ukraine.
Dubovikov also delivers supplies to soldiers and locals in need. "We're looking for pensioners who have no one, and low-income families," he says.
5Dubovikov speaks with locals at a Donbas settlement.
The volunteer says trying to convince to people to leave towns in imminent danger from the Russian invasion is largely pointless. "People don't leave. Everyone has their own reason. It's largely elderly people who say: 'We were born here, we'll die here,'" the volunteer says.
6The devastated village of Bohorodychne, in Ukraine's Donetsk region. The settlement was occupied for months by Russian forces before being recaptured, nearly completely destroyed, in September.
7Dubovikov (wearing an orange hood) speaks with locals in Bohorodychne.
The volunteer has made several delivery runs to Bohorodychne, where just five people now live. Around 50 animals are currently struggling to survive winter in the village.
8A blind dog in the ruins of a school in Bohorodychne.
"During cold snaps it is much more difficult for animals to survive than humans," Dubovikov says. "People have some reserves, they will manage somehow, but domestic animals are not accustomed to finding their own food."
9A cat stands on frozen ground in Bohorodychne.
Many animals now on the streets in eastern Ukraine are pets that their owners chose, or were forced to, abandon as the human population of the Donbas largely fled west.
10Colleagues of Dubovikov who evacuate animals from war-affected towns.
The volunteer and his colleagues also remove animals from settlements where there is active fighting. Dubovikov has a shelter in Dnipro, where animals are taken for treatment and care, then adopted out where possible.
11Dubovikov delivers aid to soldiers in eastern Ukraine.
The volunteer told RFE/RL that as long as the war continues "everyone should do what they can to help," adding, "not everyone knows how to fight." After each delivery run, Dubovikov says, "there's a sense of participation, you feel needed and worthwhile in this world."
Mittelstadt produced an assist in Monday's 3-2 overtime win over the Stars.
Mittelstadt set up Rasmus Dahlin for a game-tying goal in the first period. Over his last seven games, Mittelstadt has five assists, but his goal drought is now at 13 contests. The 24-year-old has been much more of a playmaker this season with seven goals and 21 helpers through 46 appearances, representing a career year on offense. He's added 66 shots on net while posting a minus-12 rating.

Hakanpaa produced an assist in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Coyotes.
You know things are going well for your team when even the stay-at-home defender finds the scoresheet. Towering at 6-foot-7, Hakanpaa has mixed it up a bit offensively with four goals and five assists through 48 games, but naturally, it's 77 blocked shots and 129 hits that stand out the most for the physical skater.
