Killexams : Is It Time for Engineers to Enter Augmented Reality, Too?

Check out more coverage of DesignCon 2023.

Today, companies are adopting augmented reality (AR) to assist with everything from training technicians, to perform repairs under the hood of a car, to guiding workers through the installation of chip equipment in a fab.

While wearing a headset or looking through a camera, users can view instructions, digital objects, or other images imposed on views of the real world. In some cases, they can even manipulate the scene by using their fingers to grab the corners of a virtual object and drag it to one side. While AR is becoming valuable to a range of industries, the electronics sector is still trying to figure out where it fits.

Cadence Design Systems hopes to bring the power of augmented reality to the electronics lab bench. The San Jose, California-based company offers a software tool called “InspectAR” that can display a digital representation of a printed circuit board (PCB) over a real-time view of the physical hardware.

According to Cadence, everyone from electronics engineers in a lab to the technicians on a factory floor can use it to inspect, validate, test, and identify areas for improvement on a prototype circuit board more easily.

The technology, which Cadence demoed at DesignCon 2023, requires users to upload data from the software tools they used to design the PCB. Instead of viewing the hardware through a headset such as Microsoft’s HoloLens, the prototype is placed under a camera or smartphone. InspectAR overlays the data—everything from the components and pinouts to the nets and layers—on the physical PCB, which users can view via a desktop or mobile device.

By selecting a specific layer of the PCB, users can view whether they made a mistake during the design phase of the project, or whether a fault was introduced while the device was being manufactured. If the circuit board is rotated or flipped over under the camera or smartphone, the data displayed on the device will automatically track with the coordinates of the real PCB, so you can inspect it from any angle.

According to Cadence, you can select any component or connection that belongs on the PCB, and InspectAR can immediately identify where it’s located. Alternatively, you can click on a component to display the design-specific pinout or review datasheets and/or provider information, saving you from having to constantly check the PCB’s schematics or other documentation.

As the speed of signals continues to increase and more components are crammed closer together, it's becoming more of a challenge to locate points of interest on the PCB and test that everything works before moving a prototype into mass production. According to Cadence, InspectAR can help with that problem by highlighting the right pins and connections on the PCB to probe.

Based on technology that Cadence acquired from a startup of the same name in 2020, InspectAR works with many of the most popular electronic design tools, including those from Altium, Autodesk, and Siemens.

Cadence said several people can access the data in a project at the same time and share real-time views with each other, enabling engineers, technicians, and managers around the globe to easily collaborate.

Users can leave comments on any net or component to prevent confusion during the design project, and they can insert datasheets, documents, or other files for future reference as well as instructions for testing or manufacturing the PCB. Furthermore, users can create markups or other visual aids to pinpoint areas of the physical product where they want to give feedback or propose changes.

While it’s still relatively early in the electronics industry’s use of augmented reality, Cadence’s scale should help it expand InspectAR to more customers and upgrade it with more advanced capabilities.

Before it joined Cadence in 2020, the startup behind InspectAR said that it had already amassed “thousands” of users. The tool also can be accessed on a smartphone via iOS and Android apps.

Killexams : This Is How Your Thoughts Become Your Reality

Your mind is very powerful. Yet, if you're like most people, you probably spend very little time reflecting on the way you think. After all, who thinks about thinking?

But, the way you think about yourself turns into your reality.

The Link Between Thoughts, Feelings And Behavior

Your thoughts are a catalyst for self-perpetuating cycles. What you think directly influences how you feel and how you behave. So if you think you’re a failure, you’ll feel like a failure. Then, you’ll act like a failure, which reinforces your belief that you must be a failure.

I see this happen all the time in my therapy office. Someone will come in saying, “I’m just not good enough to advance in my career.” That assumption leads her to feel discouraged and causes her to put in less effort. That lack of effort prevents her from getting a promotion.

Or, someone will say, “I’m really socially awkward.” So when that individual goes to a social gathering, he stays to in the corner by himself. When no one speaks to him, it reinforces his belief that he must be socially awkward.

Your Beliefs Get Reinforced

Once you draw a conclusion about yourself, you’re likely to do two things; look for evidence that reinforces your belief and discount anything that runs contrary to your belief.

Someone who develops the belief that he’s a failure, for example, will view each mistake as proof that he’s not good enough. When he does succeed at something, he’ll chalk it up to luck.

Consider for a minute that it might not be your lack of talent or lack of skills that are holding you back. Instead, it might be your beliefs that keep you from performing at your peak.

Creating a more positive outlook can lead to better outcomes. That’s not to say positive thoughts have magical powers. But optimistic thoughts  lead to productive behavior, which increases your chances of a successful outcome.

Challenge Your Conclusions

Take a look at the labels you’ve placed on yourself. Maybe you’ve declared yourself incompetent. Or perhaps you’ve decided you’re a bad leader.

Remind yourself that you don’t have to allow those beliefs to restrict your potential. Just because you think something, doesn’t make it true.

The good news is, you can change how you think. You can alter your perception and change your life. Here are two ways to challenge your beliefs:

• Look for evidence to the contrary. Take note of any times when your beliefs weren’t reinforced. Acknowledging exceptions to the rule will remind you that your belief isn’t always true.

• Challenge your beliefs. Perform behavioral experiments that test how true your beliefs really are. If you think you’re not good enough, do something that helps you to feel worthy. If you’ve labeled yourself too wimpy to step outside of your comfort zone, force yourself to do something that feels a little uncomfortable.

With practice, you can train your brain to think differently. When you give up those self-limiting beliefs, you’ll be better equipped to reach your greatest potential.

Killexams : Autodesk Laying Off 250 Employees

Cloud News

David Harris

Autodesk roles affected by the layoffs include a digital marketing operations project manager, digital marketing manager, technical marketing manager and web optimization manager, according to various posts by workers on LinkedIn.

Software company Autodesk is cutting its total global workforce by less than 2 percent, with about 250 workers affected.

A spokesperson for the San Francisco-based firm said the layoffs are part of Autodesk’s plans for its 2024 fiscal year, which began this week. As part of those plans, “we’re focused on ensuring that our resources remain well-aligned to support our key priorities for the coming year. As part of this process, we made the difficult decision to eliminate these roles, comprising less than 2 percent of Autodesk’s total global workforce.”

Autodesk, which had more than 12,600 employees as of 2021 and revenue of $4.39 billion in its last fiscal year, continues to hire across the company for many key positions, according to company spokesperson Christa Vu.

Autodesk, she said, “is dedicated to supporting impacted employees with severance, assistance in finding alternative jobs inside of Autodesk, and providing career services that will connect them to the resources, information, and people they need to pursue new career opportunities.”

Autodesk roles affected by the layoffs include a digital marketing operations project manager, digital marketing manager, technical marketing manager and web optimization manager, according to various posts by workers on LinkedIn.

Autodesk is a maker of software for architecture, engineering, construction, manufacturing, media, education and entertainment industries.

Autodesk joins a slew of other tech companies, including Google, Microsoft and Amazon, paring back their workforces this year to deal with challenging macroeconomic conditions and the fading IT boom created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Autodesk stock has been soaring this year, rising 20 percent to $223.63 since Jan. 1, but still down 7 percent over the past 12 months.

Killexams : Autodesk Cuts 250 Jobs as Tech Layoffs Continue

Autodesk confirmed that it was joining the parade of enterprise technology companies reducing headcount in the face of a softening global economy. The company is cutting about 250 positions, under 2% of its global workforce.

Autodesk (ticker: ADSK), which provides design software to architects, engineers and others, said it was “focused on ensuring that our resources remain well-aligned to support our key priorities for the coming year.” The company added that it will “continue to invest with discipline and focus,” and that it continues to hire for “many key positions.”

Apple is still expected to release a mixed reality headset this year, but technical issues have forced the tech giant to shelve plans for the perhaps more important lightweight augmented reality glasses that were expected later.

Bloomberg on Tuesday reported that Apple had indefinitely delayed work on the long-rumored AR glasses and pared back the scope of the project. Apple will instead target 2024 for the release of its lower-cost -- but still likely expensive -- mixed reality headset.

While the mixed-reality headset is expected to cost around $3,000, Bloomberg reports Apple is planning to follow up with a lower cost mixed reality headset priced around $1,500.

Apple-focused supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in December estimated Apple would ship its mixed reality headset in the second half of 2023 rather than the second quarter, citing software-related issues for the delay.

Also: Apple's VR/AR headset is coming. Here's everything we know so far

The mixed reality headset combines elements of augment reality and virtual reality, with components including eyeball tracking, multiple cameras, pancake optics, and lenses. AR users see the world through a lens that is overlaid with digital images and data. VR on the other hand, such as Meta's Oculus, encloses users in a digital world.

The lightweight AR kit is more like traditional glasses -- and is smaller and more complex to manufacturer.

Per Mark Gurman's Power On newsletter, Apple had until recently planned to unveil the headset this month, but has pushed back the event to its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. But there was also speculation last year that Apple could take the wraps off the headset at WWDC 2023

Apple has applied for various AR/VR-related trademarks, including "RealityOS", "Reality One", "Reality Pro", and "Reality Processor". The OS is likely to be called xrOS, while the device would be called the Reality Pro. XR stands for eXtended Reality. Apple execs have shunned the word 'metaverse'.

The headset is said to run on an Apple Mac M2 chip, feature at least 10 cameras outside and inside the device, and have very high-resolution displays.

Apple has integrated AR features into the iPhone for years, but the AR headset will be significant as it becomes the iPhone maker's first new hardware category since launching Apple Watch in 2015.
